For Immediate Release: Community Activist Rally to “Stand Down against “Blue Lives Matters.”
(Press Conference at City Hall 2nd Floor, July 22, 2016)
***** Media Advisory *****
This afternoon-Friday July 22, 2016 at 12:00 noon-The Freedom First International (SCLC), Southern Christian Leadership Conference (Chicago), Violence Interrupters, along with other Community Activist (groups) will conduct Press Conference at City Hall calling for the local (south side) Chicago community to come together in a effort to stop the blue lives matters ordinance. The group also plans to give Alderman Burkes office a demand letter to request that further plans to produce this “unfavorable” ordinance immediately stop.
Chicago Alderman Ed Burke wants the justice system to treat attacks against police officers and firefighters like “hate crimes.” Which is routinely an instant felony
Burke proposed his “Blue Lives Matter” ordinance last month. It would give harsher penalties and fines for offenses committed against current or past police officers, firefighters, and emergency first responders.
The coalition of activists say that’s an attack on their First Amendment rights. We also say it’s a distraction from the real problem -specifically when it comes to abusive police officers.
While the City of Chicago is in the midst of reform and a Department of Justice investigation- this is bad for the City’s and CPD’s public image and further degrades public trust. It time to put these issues away because they are anti-community. Shame on Burke and anyone who supports this ordinance-the group intends to send Alderman Burke and members of the City Council a clear message. NO BLUE LIVES MATTER!
