The Committee on Public Safety plans to meet at city hall Friday to consider Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s desired appointment of Andrea Zopp to the Chicago Police Board.
The police board currently has a vacancy and has been looking to add its ninth member. For the record-members of the police board hand down verdicts in cases of serious police misconduct. Each appointment has a five year term.
The Community Activist will attend the meeting to address public concern that mostly centered around the fact feel if Emmanuel is allowed the appointment with Zopp the board-then that board would be biased due to the fact Zopp as (Deputy Mayor) has an affiliation with Mayor Emanuel that may potentially prove to be biased.
While the city met the established guidelines of releasing information about the meeting 48 hours prior, members of the public voiced their concerns that the appointment was a rush-job and the city should slow down and consider community input.
At the meeting Friday morning, Alderman Reboyras decided to recess until Monday at 9:00am– likely due to unexpected media presence and the fact that only two other alderman showed up. Emanuel announced his intention to appoint Zopp in a Nov. 8 press release.
“We all can still agree with the fact that a well-known majority of Chicagoans don’t think the city’s cops treat all citizens fairly and believe a cover-up “code of silence” is widespread in the Police Department, helping drive a record-low approval rating for Mayor Rahm Emanuel‘s handling of crime, a Chicago Tribune poll from earlier this year has found. This board must not be copped and co-opted-with someone who may already be biased. “

A press conference to Chicago lay out the case against Mayor Rahm Emanuel usage city funds to pay off nonprofits, faith leaders, community activist, and social justice workers “as if those funds were his special personal slush fund.” In the wake of the Laquan McDonald shooting fallout- Rahm Emanuel’s effort was coordinated to quiet any opposition that directly resulted with Emanuel trying to turn around all negativity and harm done to his looming political image in the wake of the McDonald shooting and also growing public disapproval ratings—In addition to growing citizen mistrust in the Chicago police stands out amongst other major problems that Rahm tried to quell-which ignited his misuse of public funds.
The activist investigating the issue, seriously question if the local community is aware of the selfish and disturbing use of diverted City of Chicago funds by the Chicago Mayor. The funds in question under normal circumstances should have been used for awarding independent non-profits and civic organizations primarily to better the city through scholarships and city programs.
Many who understand that the established culture at Chicago City Hall- under Emanuel has long been able to avoid real accountability — and also we should mention Emanuel’s avoidance of sworn depositions — because City Hall bureaucrats, like those in the Chicago Police Department, continue to operate under the unwritten policies protection of policies, practices and legal standards aimed to shield the Mayor from potential harm.
For our effort-more specifically-they we want to send a clear message, that simple says, “we still haven’t forgotten, and we are prepared for a legal show down.” Leading Social Justice organizations involved are Chicago Violence Interrupters, Freedom First International, The Chicago SCLC, Tree of Life Justice League of IL along with a growing list others. 3 reasons why, we must fire Chicago PD Police Superintendent McCarthy as one measure toward preventing Chicago Violence
Yes, it is true that violence in American cities is troubling and perplexing. Even as homicide rates have declined across the country — in some places, like New York, by a remarkable amount — gunplay continues to plague economically struggling minority communities. In Chicago – disturbingly, For almost 25 years, murder has been the leading cause of death among African-American men between the ages of 15 and 34, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It is equally true and disturbing, that in Chicago, the term “police brutality” was inextricably linked to former Cmdr. Jon Burge and his “Sadistic,” South Side homicide squad, which imposed extreme measures, including torture, to extract false confessions from dozens of suspects during the Eighties and Nineties. But even after the Burge era Chicago struggles to combat community violence that is currently experiencing.
So far this year, at least 2,300 people have been shot in Chicago, about 400 more than during the same period last year, according to a Tribune analysis. Through Sunday, homicides have risen to 359, up 21 percent from 296 a year earlier, according to preliminary data from Chicago Police.
